How to link multiple GenBank submissions under one BioProject

If your study includes multiple GenBank submissions that belong together (for example, sequences from the same project or publication), you can group them so they are clearly connected and available via one link at NCBI. To do this, register a BioProject, which acts like a container for your study. All related GenBank submissions can then be linked to that BioProject and found together using a single BioProject accession number.

This article is for GenBank submitters who:

Case 1: Preparing to submit to GenBank

1. Register a BioProject

2. Submit to GenBank and provide the BioProject accession number

Case 2: Already have GenBank accessions

1. Obtain a BioProject Accession number

2. Email a GenBank-BioProject mapping table to GenBank at gb-admin@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

 Where can you learn more?

If you have related next-generation sequencing data, start submitting to Sequence Read Archive (SRA) and register a BioProject during SRA submission. See this article for details:

Notes

  • You can also link GenBank data to an already registered BioProject from related submissions elsewhere in the NCBI Submission Portal such as SRA, Genome or TSA.
  • In addition to BioProject, you can also register your samples in the BioSample database, using the BioSample Submission Portal
